What has been the greatest challenge for you in your career?
The first biggest challenge was getting established. Although, even at this stage of my career, I don’t feel fully established, I feel like I’m just beginning to start to understand how to make a documentary, how to tell a story. When I look at filmmakers like Kurosawa, Robert Altman, even Penny Marshall, documentarians like Erol Morris, Fredrik Weisman, I truly believe that a true filmmaker never retires.
Now the greatest challenge is the work-life balance. As making a film involves being in the field directing, but also pitching new stories to commissioning editors at conferences, and marketing and promoting newly made films at film festivals and community events, which often conflicts with my desire to spend time and nurture the ones I love.
