How has being a father impacted your work?
I had the opportunity to interview Francis Ford Coppola, the director of the Godfather series, Apocalypse Now, and some of the greatest films of our time. And when I asked him for some advice he would give to young filmmakers, he said to me “Start a family.” At the time I wasn’t yet a father, but now as a father of three incredible boys, I now understand what he meant. Having a family has made me look at the world in a different way which has helped me shape the types of films that I’m inspired to make. Time is a luxury, at least when you have children, and the balance between spending time with them and trying to make the films I do has taught me lessons about life I would not understand if it wasn’t for them. Priorities change, and so has my perspective, as I now look at the world through their eyes.
